Lightning victims identified

MEC to install conductors for affected families.

SIX victims of a lightning strike in KwaNongoma on Saturday have been identified – and their families are receiving support from the Premier’s office.

Mboneni Khoza (47), Hlanganani Ntshangase (32), Mfaniseni Ntshangase (23), Mfaniseni Nene (36), Themba Zulu (55) and Thembinkosi Zulu (21) were named from the 11 who were killed.

KZN MEC Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta), Nomusa Dube-Ncube, visited nine of the victims’ families on Sunday and announced that Provincial Government would assist all the families as they prepare for the funerals.

Furthermore, lightning conductors will be installed at the homes of those whose lives were lost.

Residents across the province are urged to buy and install lightning conductors as they are vital to protecting communities from such tragic incidents.

KZN Emergency Services spokesperson, Robert McKenzie, said families who own homes without conductors during a lightning storm should find refuge in a brick-built house.

‘Stay away from doors and windows, avoid baths or showers and all electronics.

‘Also, if a lightning storm is approaching, call EMRS as soon as possible so we can be on standby in case of an emergency.

‘Dial 10177 from a landline or 112 from a cellphone.’ said McKenzie.
