Bush babies abandoned in Mtunzini

Bush baby siblings, Jack and Jill are thriving.

TWO thick-tailed bush babies are now living the good life after being relocated from Zululand to one of the specialised outdoor enclosures at CROW (Centre for Rehabilitation of Wildlife).

Named Jack and Jill, the siblings were discovered abandoned in Mtunzini when only two weeks old and weighing a mere 100 grams each late last year.

Upon admission, these tiny handfuls were full of beans and kept CROW’s Primate Manager, Mabel Watts, on her toes.

The duo recovered well and are currently weighing in at a healthy 530 grams each and are able to feed themselves.

‘Jack and Jill have been relocated to a large outdoor enclosure and are loving every minute of it,’ said Watts.

‘They are growing each day and have just shed their baby fur and are becoming increasingly independent.’

CROW is currently in the process of confirming their release site and should all go as planned, they will be relocated to the site at the end of April.

‘Once at the site they will be kept in a large pre-release enclosure for up to five months to wait out the colder months. This will also allow them to become accustomed to their new surroundings.

‘Then, once released, we will still keep an eye on them for up to three months to ensure their integration back into the wild goes smoothly,’ said Watts.
