Childbirth education saves lives

Pregnancy education week to help reduce the maternal mortality rate

THE unacceptably high levels of maternal mortality can be significantly curbed if women access antenatal care and receive proper education.

This week marked the start of ‘Pregnancy Education Week’ and Netcare The Bay Hospital will be hosting a pregnancy awareness day next Saturday (21 February).

While the number of pregnant women accessing medical care has risen dramatically in recent years, fewer than half seek antenatal care before 20 weeks of pregnancy.

‘We believe in empowering women who are pregnant or who want to fall pregnant by making information available on health during pregnancy, how to prepare for the birth, various delivery options and what to expect after the baby’s birth,’ said Sister Evonne Hutton, Stork’s Nest co-ordinator at Netcare The Bay Hospital.

‘The pregnancy awareness day is an excellent opportunity to help parents-to-be prepare for this remarkable journey. Expectant mothers and their partners will have the opportunity to interact with medical professionals who will be there to offer advice,’ she said.
