Protesters cause havoc on the N2

Fairbreeze mine closed as community protests.

IRATE protesters have caused pandemonium on the N2 highway between Gingindlovu and Mtunzini, throwing stones, burning tyres and stopping vehicles.

Police have arrested 57 people who have been taken to eSikhawini SAPS.

Protesters are reportedly up in arms over the alleged lack of co-operation from the Tronox Fairbreeze mine.

Disgruntled community members told Zululand Observer journalists on the scene that they were promised jobs and more involvement in the mine. However, protesters said the mine representatives did not attend three scheduled meetings with the community.

Police are manning the scene and have dispersed the crowd but insiders say the mob are moving towards the Mtunzini Tribal Authority. They have threatened to burn down the tribal authority and have accused the local Inkosi of not voicing their concerns.

The Tronox Fairbreeze mine has been shut down and the Zululand Observer is awaiting a full response from Tronox management.
