New drug alert in schools

New drug targets primary school children.

ANTI-DRUG Alliance South Africa (ADASA) is warning school children about a new drug doing the rounds and being disguised as ‘strawberry pop rocks’ (the candy that pops in your mouth).

According to a press release, the Alliance has been completely inundated with calls from concerned parents regarding the insert on Carte Blanche on January 25, in which it was established that ‘Strawberry Quick’ is indeed a drug that really does exist.

ADASA’s CEO Quintin van Kerken said drug dealers are targeting primary school children.

‘There are a number of different flavours, and each has a different potency,’ he added.

Richards Bay SAPS confirmed that no incidents’ involving ‘Strawberry Quick’ have been reported but also advised schools to be sensitised as children are the easiest targets.

SANCA Zululand Director, Shereen Sahadav said they are aware of the drug and also advises parents to alert their children.

‘Although we have not had any reports from schools in the area, it is a reality.

‘We need to take extra precaution by educating kids about the drug,’ she said.

This crystal meth-infused drug produces symptoms such as heart palpitations, abnormal hyperactivity, dilated pupils, rapid mood swings and paranoia, among others.
