Obituary: Andries ‘Whitey’ Botha

Members of RBSC along with KZN Wildlife and family gathered in memory of the late Andries Botha.

THE Richards Bay Ski-Boat Club held a memorial service on Saturday for Whitey Botha (Andries Botha), the club’s Radio Control Operator, who passed away earlier this month after a short illness.

His family, members and staff of the club as well as Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife bid Whitey an emotional farewell at the service, which was led by Pastor Andrew Anderson in the lapa at the club.

Whitey leaves his son and daughter. Commodore, Gerrie Delport, paid tribute to Whitey for his dedicated service to the club, and its members, during the past number of years.

Whitey was instrumental in ensuring that all the club’s vessels left the harbour safely and returned safely after their outings to sea.

‘He reported for duty, no matter the weather, good or bad. Whitey was one of the very best radio operators that the club had employed,’ explained Gerrie.

‘His commitment, dedication and passion for his job earned him a special place in the hearts of the skippers, members and employees of the club.’

‘The voice of ‘Richards Bay Ski-Boat Club Standing By’ has gone silent and will be sadly missed. Whitey, our trusted friend, rest in peace.’
