Taking the next step to success

David aims to succeed despite life's obstacles.

‘THANK you mama! I’m now a registered university student because of you.’

Moving words from former eNtongande High School pupil David Tsholo (18), shortly after he registered for a Civil Engineering degree at Wits University last week.

Despite living with his single mother in a shack that regularly floods, David rose about his circumstances and passed with one distinction and seven Bs.

He was the first in his family to pass matric, and now the first to be in university.

‘I have seen my mother struggle all her life to give me a better life. She always encouraged me to focus on my education and be the best in whatever I do. Even though we didn’t have money, her love and support made me want to achieve more. I want to make her proud. She is my rock and one day I will build her a beautiful house.’

With the help of his community who assisted him with a registration fee, David said it was the first step to success.

‘My mother told me that education will open doors if I take it seriously. She worked hard to take care of me, and I would like to return the favour,’ he said.
