Blood stocks need a major boost

SANBS encourages all eligible South Africans to donate blood as the country is experiencing a blood shortage.

THE South African National Blood Service (SANBS) has seen a noticeable increase in blood stock during the festive season, but a decline in donor support since New Year has again resulted in supply dropping to critical levels.

‘Donors showed their support during this traditionally difficult time (festive season) for SANBS,’ said Communications Manager Vanessa Raju.

Although the service managed to get through the festive period without any shortages, the January decline has whittled down reserves to 1.6 days, significantly lower than the five days blood stock needed to meet national demand.

Yet, according to Zululand Blood Donor Centre’s Sister Debbie Duff the Richards Bay area is still exceeding its target.

‘Even though our centre is doing well, we still encourage people to donate blood as we have a national blood shortage,’ said Duff.

At least 3 000 units of blood need to be collected nationwide daily to keep stock at safe levels.

SANBS urges anyone who meets the minimum requirements to donate blood donor and help save lives.

To locate one’s nearest donor centre, visit www.sanbs.org.za or call 0800 11 9031.

The minimum requirements to be a blood donor are:

•be between the ages of 16 and 65 years

•weigh a minimum of 50kg

•be in general good health

•live a safe sexual lifestyle.
