New task team fight security attacks

Three security guards have been shot in Richards Bay in the past two weeks.

SINCE three security guards have been gunned down in Richards Bay in the past three weeks, police have put together a task team of some of their best SAPS members.

Richards Bay SAPS spokesperson Debbie Ferreira said the newly formed squad will do their best to end the murders and attacks on local security guards.

‘The team is hard at work probing these cases,’ said Ferreira.

‘We condemn these acts of violence against security guards working to protect our community members and businesses.’

Last week Tuesday, Mthokozisi Mthembu (49) was gunned down, but fortunately survived, at a scrap yard in Alton, and on Thursday Nocholas Qwabe (35) was murdered outside the Loerie Park complex in Arboretum.

The first murder victim was Bonginkosi Mthembu (23) who was shot while working his shift in the Nzesi area on 21 December.

Police opened two cases of murder and one for attempted murder, but no suspects have been arrested.

Ferreira denied reports that the SAPS believe there is a connection between the three assaults.

‘We have not established any definite links between these three cases.

‘This is still an ongoing investigation.

‘If any community members have more information regarding these attacks, please contact Colonel Sosibo on 035 9012410.’
