You can still make it without a degree

Doing volunteer work is also a good option.

MODERN society has convinced the youth that without a tertiary degree, they will never become financially secure.

Depending on your choice of career, jumping into the labour market straight after school is not necessarily a bad thing.

Most varsity graduates have to start at the bottom anyway once they have earned their degrees, especially since full-time students never really have the opportunity to gain meaningful experience.

Find an entry level job where you can work yourself up in the company. Surf the web for learnership and mentorship opportunities or register on websites to receive these opportunities daily via email.

Also make it known to friends, neighbours and family members that you are looking for work, as word-of-mouth ‘marketing’ is just as effective.

Most businesses send their employees for further training, which not only benefits the company, but your CV too.

Doing volunteer work is also a good option.

There are many charity organisations in South Africa, let alone the world, where you can help out.

In turn you will not only experience the joy of giving but also gain experience in a working environment and learn new skills.

If you have the funding and spontaneity, you can travel.

Many matrics have travelled from country to country doing a variety of odd jobs, such as waitering, au pairing and working on yachts, until they have enough money to move on to the next place.

This option screams adventure and will also make your CV interesting.

Parents and learners alike must understand that even though a degree is a permanent asset on one’s CV, it is not the only road to making it in the world.
