Eskom starts load shedding

Eskom has announced that it has started stage 1 load shedding due to high demand and emergency maintenance.

The announcement follows a week of severe strain on the national grid after two generators failed on Wednesday, and an influx of people returning from holiday put more pressure on the grid.

Stage one load shedding allows for up to 1000MW of the national load to be shed; stage two for up to 2000MW; and stage three for up to 4000MW.
