Men guilty of racial attack at City pub

Richards Bay men face hefty sentences for assault, crimea injuria and grievous bodily harm.

TWO Richards Bay men responsible for a racist attack on Human Rights Day have been found guilty in the the Richards Bay Magistrate’s Court on two counts of crimen injuria, assault and grievous bodily harm.

Hendrik Heerden was convicted on two counts of crimen injuria and sentenced to fours years imprisonment or a fine of R4 000, while Daniel Roux was convicted on charges of assault and grievous bodily harm and sentenced to one year imprisonment or a fine of R1 500.

On 27 March three Richards Bay women were manhandled and beaten while having racial remarks directed at them outside a bar in Essenwood Way in Arboretum.

The women were celebrating the public holiday and were looking for a spot to hang out when they were refused entry by the accused standing at the entrance of the bar.

They were attacked and assaulted and told to go somewhere else as it ‘was not a place for Blacks’ and they would be beaten up if they did not listen.

They had to receive medical attention for their injuries.
