Rhino poaching suspects tracked down and arrested

Police find illegal AK47 believed to have been used for rhino poaching

CRIME Intelligence in collaboration with the Ulundi Tactical Response Team (TRT) arrested two men in possession of illegal firearms believed to have been used for rhino poaching in the Hluhluwe game reserve.

An AK47, 9mm pistol and ammunition were discovered in the mens’ possession in Ulundi’s Mahlabathini area on Thursday night.

The firearms were also reportedly used in rural faction fights in the area three to four years ago.

The firearms were sent to forensic ballistics in Durban to confirm links to the crimes.

The 31 and 41-year-old suspects have in the meantime been charged with possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

They will appear in the Mahlabathini Magistrates Court today (Monday).
