Double electricity blow for consumers

City still on load shedding alert as planned power outages take place.

WHILE consumers could face further bouts of load shedding this week, scheduled outages for maintenance purposes will also kick in for residents within the City of uMhlathuze.

This comes as the struggling power utility implemented stage two load-shedding in Zululand during the weekend.

Eskom declared a power emergency throughout the country on Friday after losing 1 700MW of generating power.

Stage 1 allows for up to 1 000MW of the national load to be shed, stage 2 for up to 2 000MW and stage 3 for up to 4 000MW.

On Monday afternoon, Eskom said there was a low risk of rolling blackouts happening this week after the weekend load shedding allowed it to refuel some of its capacity.

However, the City warned that the grid was ‘still very tight’ and load shedding could be implemented at any time as per Eskom’s directive.

As soon as the municipality is notified by Eskom of an urgent need to cut power, residents would be notified via sms.

Planned outages

Meanwhile, the City will also be conducting planned outages in various suburbs for maintenance purposes from this week until 14 December.

‘All outages should start at 8am and be completed by 4pm. Should the supply not be isolated within one hour from the said start time, then the outage will not be taking place,’ said the City statement.

‘Customers are requested to treat all electrical appliances as live during the duration of the outage as the electricity supply can be re-energised at any time.

Any customers experiencing a power failure after the electricity is re-energised, should contact the Call Centre on 0800 222827.’
