Hundreds of pets cast off over holidays

Feed the four-legged friends at the SPCA this festive season.

IT may be a festive season for humans, but for many pets it proves to be a miserable time.

Each year as Zululanders prepare to pack up and go away for their December holidays, numerous animals get dropped off permanently at the SPCA.

Last year more than 300 dogs and cats were surrendered at SPCA Richards Bay during November and December alone.

The influx of dogs and cats during this time puts immense pressure on the animal welfares’ food stocks.

Now the non-profit organisation calls on local community members to show their support for these pooches during this difficult time.

‘Food supply has been extremely low and we expect it to drop even further with the holidays fast approaching,’ said SPCA Richards Bay Chairperson Anna-Marie Coetzee.

‘We kindly ask all Zululanders and companies to assist us in keeping their tummies full by donating food or hosting food runs.

‘We would also like to sincerely thank everyone who has shown the SPCA their support.’

Coetzee also urges pet owners to consider boarding their animals or organising reliable neighbours or friends to look after their four-legged companions instead of giving them up permanently before leaving on holiday.

To donate, contact SPCA Richards Bay on 035 7532086 or SPCA Empangeni on 035 7929129.
