Prayer meeting against crime

Meeting comes after the remains of a missing woman were discovered in the bushes last month.

VARIOUS church denominations gathered to denounce the murder of women in the area of eMabuyeni outside eSikhaleni.

The prayer meeting took place last Thursday after the discovery of missing 23-year-old Thobile Dolly Mhlongo’s remains.

She disappeared on 25 July while on her way to eSikhaleni FET College to collect her certificate.

Thobile’s remains was discovered on 26 October by a passer-by and identified by the clothing she wore when she went missing.

This incident, which was the fourth of its kind in the area of eMabuyeni, prompted Ward 13 Councilor CS Kweyama to call for the prayer meeting.

uMhlathuze Deputy Mayor Vera Gumbi was there to support the call.

Addressing the congregants gathered under the trees, she said, ‘As mothers we must stop condoning our sons to continue with these crimes. Report them to the local police.’

Councilor Kweyama said, ‘As a community we must stand together, and eliminate this evil. We are still going to call a community meeting in which we expect families to bring their sons along so they are taught about good behaviour.’

eSikhaleni CPF Chairperson Msizi Mthembu thanked Deputy Mayor Gumbi for assisting with a machine to remove overgrown bushes where people have to cross, which will hopefully stop or at least limit attacks,’
