The pair were returning from Sodwana Bay in an official vehicle.

TWO iSimangaliso Wetland Park officials were killed in a head-on collision between a bakkie and a truck on the N2 near Mtubatuba on Wednesday.

Park Operations Director at iSimangaliso, Herbert Mthembu, and Compliance Officer Thembe Buthelezi were returning from Sodwana Bay in an official vehicle after planning for new field ranger rhino anti-poaching camps.

Mthembu leaves his wife Alice, who runs Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife campsites in St Lucia, and a daughter Ayanda, who is currently writing matric.

Buthelezi leaves two young children.

The truck driver sustained serious injuries and was treated by paramedics at the scene before being transported to Hlabisa Hospital for further treatment.

Also in the uMkhanyakude District, two cars collided on the R618, resulting in two people sustaining serious injuries.

The cause of both accidents is currently being investigated by the police.

Following frequent call-outs relating to accidents involving livestock or wild animals, KZN EMS spokesperson Robert McKenzie has urged motorists to be extremely cautious when driving through areas where animals may cross the road, especially at night.
