Forty years for rape and robbery

Ndwedwe man convicted of rape, robbery and unlicensed firearm

THE Verulam Regional Court convicted and sentenced Sibusiso Doda Makhanya (31) to 40 years imprisonment for rape and robbery.

He faced charges for rape, house robbery and possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

He was found guilty of entering a 47-year-old woman’s house in Ndwedwe on 5 September, pointing a firearm at her before attacking and raping her.

He also robbed the victim of her cellphone, wedding ring, cash and fled the scene on foot.

The incident was reported to the Ndwedwe police and the KwaDukuza Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit took over the investigation and the accused was arrested following intensive investigations.

The victim’s belongings were found in Makhanya’s possession and he was positively linked to the case through DNA.

He was also found in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

His was sentenced to 15 years for rape, 15 years for robbery, five years for being in possession of an unlicensed firearm and another five years for possession of ammunition.
