Police seize AK47

An AK47, shot gun and 303 rifle with a total of 51 live rounds of ammunition was confiscated by Empangeni SAPS.

RANDOM police operations in the Mevamhlophe area on Saturday evening resulted in the arrest of a suspect in possession of firearms and ammunition.

Empangeni SAPS Constable Mthokozisi Mngomezulu travelling along the R34 conducting patrols, seized Sindukufa Shange (48) and confiscated a shotgun with 12 live rounds, an AK47 assault rifle with 29 live rounds and a .303 assault rifle with 10 live rounds.

Charged with six counts overall, Shange took to the dock on Monday at the Empangeni Magistrate’s Court and remains in custody until his next appearance.

According to Empangeni SAPS Spokesperson Captain Mbongeni Mdlalose, Shange originally from Mevamhlope currently lives and works in Port Shepstone.

‘He was found pulled over in a black Renault on the R34 just sitting in his vehicle, which seemed somewhat odd to Constable Mngomezulu. When the Constable approached the vehicle and found the shotgun on the passenger seat, he was arrested and the Constable called the K9 Unit for back up,’ said Mdlalose.
