Bro’s, don’t mow your Mo

Movember is here, bring out the moustache!

IT’S time again for Zululand men to cultivate moustaches – even if it is at the risk of endless nagging from the wife.

It is all in support of a worthy charitable cause – the annual Movember movement.

From Muttonchops, Sidewhiskers and Horseshoes to the Pencil, Handlebar and Fu Manchu – we want it all this November!

November has been set aside as Men’s Health Awareness Month and the Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA) urges all men, including survivors, to encourage one another to invest in their health through regular self-examinations, getting screened and adopting a balanced lifestyle to reduce the risk of cancer.

‘This is the 6th year that CANSA is partnering with the Movember campaign. We encourage men to grow a moustache in lieu of wearing a ribbon and to raise awareness regarding prostate and testicular cancer.

‘We are also available to supply health awareness materials and to arrange for screening.’ said Helen Ludwig CANSA House Community Mobiliser, Lizzy van Zyl.

From 30 Mo Bros in Melbourne, Australia in 2003 to four million Mos globally by 2013, Movember, through the power of the moustache, has become a truly international movement that is changing the face of men’s health.

Ranked among the top 100 best non-governmental charities in the world, Movember has raised funds towards the world’s first Prostate Cancer Genome Mapping Project aimed at expanding the understanding of how prostate cancer works.

Women are also encouraged to lend support.

‘A Mo Sista loves moustaches and is dedicated to supporting the men in her life to help promote the importance of men’s health.

‘Mo Sistas are champions of men’s health, not only by encouraging the men in their lives to grow a Mo, but actively signing up and raising funds and awareness themselves,’ said CANSA uThungulu Regional Manager Cara Noble.

‘The rules are simple for the men. Start off clean shaven, register at movember.com, make a donation, grow and groom your mo for the month and make a difference,’ Noble said.
