Breaking News: Mtunzini man tested for Ebola

Despite earlier denials by KZN  health authorities, a Zululander is being quarantined in Durban’s Addington Hospital.

THE Zululand Observer has received two separate reports from reliable senior health sources that a Mtunzini man is being tested for the Ebola virus.

The Zululander, who had been working in Sierra Leone, was reportedly admitted to Addington Hospital earlier this morning after displaying symptoms of diarrhoea and vomiting.

The middle-aged man had returned from the West African country earlier this month and according to sources, tested negative for the Ebola virus on 15 October.

However, as a precautionary measure, he was told to contact the National Institute for Communicable Diseases if he experienced any symptoms of the virus during the following 21 days.

Sources said the man, known to the Zululand Observer, informed authorities yesterday that he had symptoms of diarrhoea and vomiting.

The patient was reportedly transported via ambulance from Mtunzini to Addington Hospital earlier today, where he was being tested for the disease. While the man does display symptoms of the virus within the 2-21 day incubation period, there is at this stage  no confirmation that he has been infected with the disease.

Earlier today, the KZN Health Department said there had been no suspected or confirmed case of Ebola in KZN.

The department further added that Addington Hospital was the only hospital in the province with the essential facilities to treat positive Ebola cases.
