Creating drama about rhino poaching

The ‘Masivikele Obhejane’ awareness project supports anti- poaching initiatives.

WITH the alarming increase of rhino poaching in the region, the eSikhaleni Arts and Culture group is determined to create awareness about the problem through music and drama.

The ‘Masivikele Obhejane’ (Let’s protect our rhinos) campaign, is an educational and entertainment project used to educate the public about the importance of protecting the environment and promote knowledge about rhino poaching.

It includes a drama performance and presentation. The aim of the project is to involve people from rural areas and urban townships in the battle against poaching.

‘We want to spread the message to people that have difficulties getting such information. The initiative was formed two years ago and we visit schools and communities around game reserves. I have involved young unemployed people to be part of the project,’ said group leader Sizwe Zakwe.

‘When we finish our performances, we than ask questions to the audience. In this way we are able to have discussions and allow people to get involved,’

Zakwe said the group is already working with local artists on a music album, and will involve the taxi industry to spread the message through music.
