Cops launch task team

Residential and business burglary and hijacking on the rise in Empangeni.

THE hike in residential and business burglaries as well as hijackings in Empangeni and Ngwelezane has resulted in the formation of a specialised task team to investigate and curb these crimes.

Last week, a case of attempted residential burglary was opened by a resident of Kudu Road and three men were subsequently arrested.

Later that day two men were found jumping over green belts and backyards between Kildare and Bryden Roads.

This week, residents in Pasteur Road and Intrepid Avenue fell victim to residential burglaries after criminals gained entry through windows.

According to Empangeni SAPS Spokesperson Captain Mbongeni Mdlalose, the gang’s modus operandi is to break or cut windows and unhinge unlocked windows.

‘The gang in operation has also been gaining entry through garage windows with door interleading to the main house. They are targeting electronic gadgets and jewellery,’ he said.

‘To date we have arrested one man we suspect to be a ringleader and several others who are in custody pending further investigation.

‘We urge residents to secure their fencing, make sure they close their windows properly.

‘Having alert dogs helps and if affordable, please install burglar bars,’

‘I encourage building a trustworthy friendship with your neighbour to create a form of neighbourhood watch.’ Mdlalose said.

Hijacking

In addition, an attempted hijacking took place in Hibiscus Street and later in Anthony Crescent prior to an actual hijacking in Cactus Street where a 2014 Toyota Hilux was stolen.

‘Hijacking has been on the rise especially double cab bakkies and the like. Please be alert, and take necessary safety precautions. Most importantly, do not fight back. Your life is far more valuable than a vehicle.’ he added.

All crimes or suspected crimes must be reported. For assistance please dial 10111 or preferably 112 from a cellphone.

Empangeni SAPS direct line is 035 901 5803/06.
