Water crisis in Mzingazi

Water tankers dispatched in uThungulu District to address water shortages.

TENSIONS ran high in Mzingazi after the water supply was cut off in some areas.

Resident Sharon Mdletshe said chaos unfolded as thousands of residents queued to collect water from a single water tanker in Ward 6.

Mdletshe said the area ‘was like a war zone’ as the community began panicking over the water crisis and only one tanker arrived to service them.

‘I used my vehicle to help ferry members to seek water elsewhere until 11pm that night and the following morning began the same routine from 7am.

‘We understand that there is a drought and water restrictions are in place but proper arrangements must be made to meet the need.

‘The last tanker arrived on Sunday and till today (Tuesday) we have not received water again,’ she said.

Problem

Meanwhile,Ward 6 Councillor, Makheni Mbuyazi confirmed that the water crisis had affected his area and water tankers were deployed to address the shortages.

He said three water tankers were servicing affected Wards 5, 6 and 14 from Mzingazi to Sokhulu.

‘This area has been declared a disaster area and thousands of residents have been affected. The tankers are visiting the areas every second day to deliver water,’ said Mbuyazi.

The uThungulu District Municipality confirmed they are following a water tanker schedule as no alternate water sources are available.
