New reading support for teachers

New reading stars forum launched for teachers.

THE Department of Education in uThungulu launched a Reading Stars Forum at St Catherine’s School in Empangeni.

The aim of the programme was to equip primary school teachers with the knowledge and skills to maintain the culture of reading in their classrooms.

It was set up under the Jika iMfundo slogan, which means ‘changing education’.

Uthungulu Chief Education Specialist, Zethu Masuku, encouraged teachers to take part in the programme and make a difference in their schools.

She said parents, teachers and society need to work together and preach the reading culture.

‘To read opens a window of many possibilities, and as the education department we want to encourage teachers to open their school libraries and book clubs, in order to assist young stars.’

St Catherine’s librarian, Deirdre Devan described how the librarian of the 21st century works, while READ representative Thobile Mchunu explained methods teachers should use in their schools.
