Queen Regina takes the cake

Zululand's doyenne of the community press Regina Anthony celebrated her 87th birthday today.

The indomitable Grand Lady of community newspapers, Regina Anthony, enjoyed another blessed milestone as she celebrated her 87th birthday today (Friday).

That’s eight decades of inspiring the world with her presence: in person, in writing and in spirit.

Few would have achieved in their lifetime what this wonderful woman has done.

Not only has she given birth to her own family, but she has founded, bred and raised an organisation that has changed the face of Zululand.

Along the way, she has dented a few egos and put many slothful journalists firmly in their place, but for the most part she has been an inspiration and fountain of knowledge and wisdom for those who would listen.

Her unshakable faith, depth of spirituality and abundant love for the helpless and hopeless manifested in the formation of DICE, an organisation that most aptly represents this living legend.

Viva, Mrs A, viva!

The celebrations got underway on Friday morning with staff lining the entrance of the ZO offices in Empangeni to welcome the company’s founder and Managing Director.

Brought to tears, an overwhelmed Mrs Anthony stood speechless as pupils of Empangeni High School sang a melodious Happy Birthday, followed by a moving rendition of ‘Old Irish Blessing’.

The festivities continued inside with a custom-made designer cake featuring ‘Queen Regina’ on her throne.

Laughter filled the air as staff rendered their own rap/song composition to the delight of the birthday boss.

Although an in-house celebration, the number of messages, calls and flowers from the greater community shows that the influence of Mrs Anthony extends across all sections of the community and that she is respected by both the young and the elderly.
