Port gets pupils up to speed

Over 2 300 young Zululanders get sea savvy for port careers.

THE Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) has opened the harbour’s doors to pupils interested in learning more about career opportunities in the maritime industry.

From today (Monday) to Friday, pupilslearners from Grade 10 to 12 have been invited to find out more about the varied career paths available within the TNPA during National Careers Week.

‘The initiative, in partnership with the Provincial Departments of Education in South Africa, will showcase the many exciting career opportunities in the maritime industry, while also promoting Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) as the key subjects in unlocking these careers,’ said TNPA GM for Human Resources Banyani Foba.

The Port of Richards Bay will host more than 2 300 youngsters from various schools in the uThungulu District throughout this week.

They will learn about training opportunities, bursaries available as well as engineering and marine prospects for both men and women.

‘While TNPA has the highest number of female marine employees in the world at the levels of Deputy Harbour Master, Marine Operations Manager, Tug Master and Pilot, the organisation is actively promoting gender empowerment and will flag TNPA credentials as a gender-neutral employer of choice,’ said Foba.

‘The maritime industry worldwide faces a serious skills shortage.

‘This is an opportunity for young learners to gain valuable information at a very critical moment in their schooling careers about our commitment to addressing this shortage and how they can fully grasp the many exciting opportunities available to them.’
