Couple killed in Empangeni hijacking

An eSikhaleni couple were gunned down at Empangeni A taxi rank last night.

A HUSBAND and wife were tragically shot and killed in what is believed to be a hijacking at the Empangeni A taxi rank on Thursday night.

Mr and Mrs Shange, a well-known couple from eSikhaleni were murdered at about 6.30pm at the busy rank.

The motive of the attack is unknown and details are still sketchy.

It is believed one of the victims was shot in the chest while the other was shot in the abdomen.

News of the killing has left eSikhaleni residents in shock and disbelief. uMhlathuze City Mayor Elphas Mbatha sent his condolences to the Shange family early on Friday morning.

‘I have learned with shock that Mr and Mrs Shange of eSikhaleni were murdered at the Empangeni A taxi rank yesterday,’ said Mbatha.

The Mayor further called for speedy improvement of the rank including lighting and other amenities following a meeting last week with taxi associations from the rank.

‘I visited this taxi rank in 2012 and asked that lighting and toilet facilities must be looked at. The electricity section must attend to the lighting with immediate effect to reduce incidences of crime. Toilets must be attended to as well as remedial work on the perimeter fence,’ Mbatha said.
