Legal eagle Chanelle fights for the people

John Ross College Old Girl, will join the specialised unit for sexual crimes training programme at the Wynberg Regional Magistrate’s Court.

FAST tracking her way to the top of the justice system, John Ross College alumni and LLB Law graduate, Chanelle Goschen (24) has been accepted at the Specialised Unit for Sexual Crimes at the Wynberg Regional Magistrate’s Court Training Programme.

Proudly representing Zululand, Chanelle is currently an articles clerk at a Cape Town based law firm and is due to write her Attorney Admissions exam.

Also a Legal Aid Clinic Coordinator, who provides advice to communities and people in state institutions, Chanelle’s passion for Human Rights and the protection thereof has been appreciated and published in several International Law Journals where her view on local customs and trends are commented on.

‘I have always had an intense love for people and have been intrigued with the problems faced in society and also the means of communicating and resolving these problems.

‘I am very outspoken and independent, sometimes to my own detriment, so I chose to look at a career that involved me bridging that gap between people who had unmet needs and resources who could not speak for themselves and I help in the provision of solutions,’ she said.

Career

Pursuing a professional career in South African Law, Chanelle’s interest in State Prosecution saw her spend much of her time in magistrates’ courts, legal aid clinics and offering her free holiday time for any experience that was of a legal nature.

‘Through the exposure, I realised the frustrations of communities regarding crime and the difficulties faced by the State and courts to deal with the cases before them. I decided that I am strong enough to work 14 hours a day for other people and passionate enough to spend the rest of my life trying to actively help and show communities that justice can be served if you report crimes,’ she said.

Currently specialising in forensics and sexual crimes, this head-strong woman is preparing for her upcoming exams and completing research for her dissertation.

Goals

Inspired by the values her mother has instilled within her and filled with a great hunger to succeed, Chanelle is a self-confessed extreme patriot who is motivated by the opportunities life has to offer.

‘I just keep making lists of goals and dreams. As soon as I achieve them I just make more!’ she said.

To unwind from her law-driven lifestyle, Chanelle enjoys a good dish of buttermilk marinated chicken pops with blue cheese cream sauce and popcorn powder accompanied by a glass of Stellenbosch wine.
