Mandlanzini protesters case transferred to Regional Court.

THE matter involving 27 Mandlanzini community members implicated in the protest action which broke out in May has been transferred to the Richards Bay Regional Court.

The accused appeared in court on Tuesday and were warned to be back in court on 24 July. Their bail of R500 was extended.

Facing charges of public violence, the mass group was arrested and charged after gathering illegally, a day before the national elections in May.

Police had to intervene after violence erupted in Mandlanzini on 6 May as residents armed with weapons gathered unlawfully, burnt tyres in the road and torched the Mandlanzini Community Hall.

Two separate groups with a total of 45 community members were arrested at different times after illegally gathering with intent to disturb the peace.

The second group arrested later that day at the Mandlanzini community hall where the building had been set on fire, faces arson and malicious damage to property charges and will appear in court on 17 July.
