More fires around Melmoth

Fire fighters create fire breaks around farm houses to prevent them from being destroyed.

WHILE the visitors at the Ulundi Air Show watched the dramatic stunts of the planes on Saturday, farmers, foresters and fire fighters had their own air show as the bombers were called on to fight fires in the area between Melmoth and Ulundi.

Unfortunately, these were no stunts and the fire fighters had to create fire breaks around farm houses to prevent them from being destroyed.

Most of what was destroyed were sugar cane fields, but exact details are not yet available as the reports of the fire are still being received by the Zululand Inland Fire Association.

The public is once again called to be careful and to prevent fires, especially in hot dry conditions.

The aircraft are on standby for the fire season and have been placed in strategic places throughout Zululand since Tuesday, 1 July.
