Developing farmers show off

Department of Agriculture celebrated the harvest of farmers they have been mentoring.

ALL roads headed to Mbongolwane when the Department of Agriculture celebrated the harvest of farmers they have been mentoring.

It was all joy as the women ululated, singing ’emasimini Sohlangana emasimini sishaya igeja’.

Motivation farming was the order of the day to the impoverished community of Ekhangelani. The speakers took turns as they taught the community proper methods of farming and gave warnings regarding the consumption of unhealthy foods.

Hlengiwe Ngubane, who was the speaker of the day, stressed that ‘you are what you eat’. She went on to explain how food processing can create job opportunities.

In an area with no electricity and scarcity of water, farming is a priority means of income.

The maize produced is supplied to mills for the production of mealie-meal.

This is one of the ways the department is helping.

The women are also being assisted with free seeds and a tractor for ploughing.
