Blood supply shortage

Help boost low blood stocks by donating today.

BLOOD stocks have plummeted to 2.5 days’ supply and the South African National Blood Services (SANBS) is calling on donors to help boost supplies by donating urgently.

In commemoration of Madiba Day on 18 July, SANBS is inviting the public to celebrate a day in which people all over the world are called to give 67 minutes of their time to making a difference in their communities.

The organisation needs to have five-day supply in hand to meet demand.

According to SANBS Communications Manager, Vanessa Raju, this year is particularly symbolic as citizens strive to keep the legacy of this great statesman alive and make everyday a Mandela Day.

‘Each individual has the ability and responsibility to impact positive change every day and in support of this we are calling on all South Africans to make a difference by donating blood.

‘The objective of the campaign is to inspire individuals to take action to help change the world and the lives of others for the better. ‘Blood donation is one of the simplest ways to make a difference to the lives of others and it is something you can continue to do every 56 days, a sustainable action to make a difference to the lives of others,’ she said.

To donate, visit the Richards Bay Blood Donor Centre at Boardwalk Inkwazi Shopping Centre.

Requirements for donors

• Between the ages of 16-65 years old

• Weigh more than 50kg

• Have eaten a good meal before donating

• Lead a sexually safe lifestyle

• Be healthy on the day of donation
