Zini’s petty crime spate

Petty crimes are becoming a weekly occurrence in Mtunzini but residents are not reporting them to the police.

MTUNZINI residents have been experiencing a spate of petty crimes recently from housebreaking to theft of cars and motor boats.

Last week, a resident who has a second, separate house on their property, woke up to find that the glass from a window had been removed and various items had been stolen.

“We normally have a tenant on the property, but he has not been there for a few months and I think somebody noticed. I am not sure of the exact time they came in or what they took, but the place looked like it had been ransacked,’ the resident said.

Last month, some visitors to the Umlalazi Lagoon left their valuables in their vehicle. When they retured to their vehicle, they found the window had been forced open and their possessions taken.

Reports of residents and visitors leaving their vehicles unlocked while running into the shops had also returned to their cars to find their cellphones, wallets and other valuables had disappeared.

Boat owners have also been complaining that they cannot leave their boats unattended. One resident explained how batteries, radio equipment and even petrol had been taken from his boat. Another resident confessed that their garden hose had been stolen from outside their front gate.

According to a spokesperson at Mtunzini’s Police Station, the police are monitoring any criminal activity in Mtunzini and while reports of petty crimes maybe discussed among residents, not many of the crimes have been reported to the police station.

‘This is a concerning situation as we need to stop the petty crimes to prevent the major ones from taking place.’

While Mtunzini is known as been a safe community with very little crime, residents must never be complacent and must always be vigilant when out and about or at home according to police.

Reporting even the pettiest criminal activity to police.
