A princess at the ball

Matric dance sponsor leaves John Ross pupil feeling like a princess.

WHEN KwaSokhulu Reserve pupil, Snegugu Mthiyane (18) entered the East Coast Radio (ECR) Matric Farewell Competition in March, she never visualised being followed by the SABC television crew and pampered like a princess.

Sne lived like Cinderella for the day and evening of her matric farewell at John Ross College in Richards Bay last Friday night. She was primped and pampered by her own personal beauticians and stylists; dressed in an evening gown by Lynne McMaster and accompanied by ECR presenter Sky Tshabalala in their own chauffeured BMW classic.

‘I was shocked when I had the news that I had won. I felt more blessed than lucky. The experience made me feel like a princess and was overwhelmed by all the attention. I will never forget it,’ said Snegugu.

In March, ECR presenter Zaba Simbine, began a provincial-wide search for a Grade 12 pupil who needed a Cinderella-like makeover for their farewell function. Entries streamed in but it was Sne who bagged the once-in-a-lifetime prize.

‘I saw the competition on Facebook and wrote a letter to Zaba. I didn’t know I would win, and for this I thank God.’

‘I believe that every girl deserves to be spoiled and feel like a princess. Sne is a hard working young woman who intends to study law at the University of KwaZulu-Natal next year. I believe hard work should be rewarded,’ said Zaba.

The princess fairytale experience was filmed by SABC 2 Hectic Nine 9 TV crew and was aired over the weekend.
