Two pupils die in N2 crash

Two teens died and others injured in N2 accident.

MATRIC farewell celebrations ended in tragedy when two local pupils died in an accident on the N2 highway during the weekend.

Two pupils were seriously injured in the incident when a bakkie and a truck collided near the Engen garage towards the Empangeni off-ramp.

Using the jaws of life, one trapped person was extricated from the bakkie. Three others were thrown out of the vehicle on impact.

According to ICE Medical Rescue paramedic, Siphelele Luthuli, the scene was traumatic for those who stopped to assist.

‘I responded to the call at 5am. Two of the passengers whose bodies were found close to the scene clearly died on impact, while two others seriously injured were taken to hospital with spinal injuries and deep lacerations.

‘The vehicle that carried the four passengers was hanging from the bridge rails. A tow-truck had to pull the mangled wreck out of the way before the fire department could gain access,’ Luthuli said.

A source at the scene reported that family and community members quickly gathered next to the crash to pray for the injured and the souls of the deceased.

The names of the deceased have not been released.

Empangeni SAPS spokesperson, Captain Mbongeni Mdlalose, confirmed the fatal accident. A docket has been opened at the Empangeni police station for further investigation.
