New route for local tourist entities

Local game changer for Zululand's tourism operators.

RULES have now officially changed for all businesses operating in the tourism sector.

With the recent establishment of the uMhlathuze Community Tourism Organisation (CTO), local tourism product owners must be affiliated through Zululand’s CTO before they can attain provincial registration.

At a presentation by the Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs (DEDTEA) last Friday, Tourism Planning Assistant Manager, Nkululeka Dlamini said proof of membership with the CTO is compulsory.

‘It’s crucial to register your business according to regulations that were promulgated under the KwaZulu-Natal Tourism Amendment Act 2002, which stipulates that it is mandatory for enterprises whose primary objective is to provide services and facilities to tourists,’ said Dlamini.

‘Documents required to register as a CTO includes a signed registration form; a CTO recognition letter from the municipality; a signed code of conduct; proof of payment (R150) paid on an annual basis as well as public liability insurance.’

Dlamini also asserted any tourism related business ranging from accommodation establishments, conference venues and recreation activities to restaurants and sporting facilities have to abide by these rules.

Should these establishments not comply, operators could be fined up to R10 000 for contravening the regulations or have its registration suspended for a period of up to three years.

But if businesses do comply, he highlighted they will be listed on the Tourism KwaZulu-Natal (TKZN) website for marketing purposes with access to TKZN’s logo for brochures.

‘Registered businesses’ brochures will also be displayed at the TKZN information offices and be listed in the Accommodation Guide or as tour operators on the Travel Guide.

‘They will also be given the opportunity to attend trade shows.’
