‘Sneaky Ninjas’ plague Zini

Two scam artists are stealing money from local shops in Mtunzini.

TWO suspected con-artists, posing as visitors on holiday from Dubai are doing the rounds in Mtunzini, reportedly stealing money

from shops and businesses.

Dubbed the ‘Sneaky Ninjas’, the couple have been sneaking money from under the noses of shop owners in broad daylight, with their latest victim having been Mica Hardware.

The scam artists’ modus operandi entails a claim that, been foreign tourists, they do not understand South African currency.

A conversation ensues and the two ‘sneaky ninjas’ question the teller about what denominations our bank notes are available in.

This leads to the big question: ‘What is the largest note with the most value?’, and asking the teller to show them one.

According to an employee at Mica the male asked to see the note which was handed to him after the till had been opened.

‘He started folding the note and I asked him what he was doing and said I wanted the note back.

‘He handed it back, I unfolded it and put it back in the till.’ the employee explained.

At this point the pair thanked the teller and exited the store.

‘They were very polite, thanked me and walked out but something did not feel right so I recounted the money in my till.

‘It was short by R1 300. I ran outside but they had a car and driver waiting and sped off with the money in a blue Renault Clio.

‘It was like magic. I still do not know how they got hold of all that cash.’ the bewildered employee admitted.

The incident was reported to the Mtunzini SAPS and a case of theft was opened.

This is not the first time such an incident has occurred.

Surry and Aroona Makka, owners of Mtunzini Superette experienced the same thing a few months ago.

The couple spun Aroona a similar story and when they walked out of the shop they had pocketed over a thousand rand.

So on Tuesday when two foreigners walked into their store and tried the same stunt, Surry was quick to responded in the negative and the couple left the shop empty-handed.

Unknown to them, Surry has a CCTV system in his shop and the two were caught on camera.

However no arrests have yet been made.
