Poacher shot in the buttocks

Suspected poacher shot by security guards at Thula Thula.

ARMED with a rifle, a suspected poacher was shot and arrested at the exclusive private game reserve, Thula Thula on Tuesday afternoon following a shoot-out with security guards in broad daylight.

Three suspects reportedly opened fire on Thula Thula’s 24-hour security team, which resulted in one of the men being shot in the buttocks.

Two of the men managed to escape with their firearms.

The wounded suspect was arrested on the scene and is being held at the Ntambanana SAP.

‘We are not sure what the suspects were after, but we are taking every precautionary measure to protect our rhinos,’ said Thula Thula owner, Françoise Malby-Anthony.

‘We will be placing tracking devices on our rhinos as it is important to conserve our wildlife. There was an unbelievable response from the public to the posting of photographs on our Thula Thula Facebook page and it just shows the frustration of people provoked by increasing violence and rhino poaching.

‘People are becoming aggressive towards any form of poaching,’ Malby-Anthony said.
