Graceful Grace, 90 and still going strong

Ma Grace never misses a Bible study lesson.

PLEASANTLY charming, incredibly witty and fondly bestowed the name ‘Ma Grace’, Empangeni resident Grace Joseph and members of the Baptist Church Loving Hearts Coffee Club celebrated her 90th birthday last week.

Born in Tinley Manor and raised at Kersney Tea Estate, Ma Grace later moved to Zululand where, together with her husband, evangelist MC Joseph, set out to do God’s work.

‘My husband was actively involved in spreading the gospel and establishing the Baptist denomination throughout Zululand,’ she said.

To this day, Ma Grace never misses a Bible study lesson.

Playing the role behind the scenes, Ma Grace always ensured the smooth running of gatherings and full tummies of attendees.

‘She is an incredible cook. One of her classic all-time favourite dishes is chicken pilaau, which has become a Joseph speciality,’ said her granddaughter Julia Joseph.

A woman on fire for the Lord, a spirited socialite, and deeply loved by all, it is said that Ma Grace is always the first to jot her name down for a church camp.

Having five grandchildren, one of the many lessons she has taught her granddaughters is to always take pride in their appearance.

‘Ma Grace is quite the fashionista. She is always looking prim and proper in her Sunday best. There are days I won’t wear any earrings and she would reprimand me,’ chuckled congregant Rita Pillay.

‘She has been an incredible mentor to my family and I. My strongest prayer warrior and support, she offers so much encouragement to all.’

Exceptionally loving, Ma Grace will always share a great big hug and kiss with every person when she enters the room.
