Melmoth hit by two robberies

Police warn Melmoth residents and businesses of crime wave

THE police have has stepped up their patrols and visibility following two robberies in the Melmoth area during the weekend.

On Saturday night two on-duty security guards at a security depot in Melmoth were held up by about seven armed men and they were forced to hand over their two shotguns.

Before entering the depot building, the robbers tied up the guards.

After the robbers had left, it was found that they had attempted to break open the safe, but had failed, causing damage to the outer doors.

The armed men fled with the security guards’ shotguns and cell phones.

No one was injured in the incident.

In an unrelated matter, the Zululand FM radio offices in Melmoth were also robbed in the early hours of Sunday morning by two men after they threatened the security guard with knives to gain access.

They stole speakers and a television.

Following information received, the Melmoth SAPS arrested two suspects.

Local businesses are advised to be alert and report any suspicious persons and vehicles to the police.
