Election results timeline

Votes are in and counting has begun.

Thursday, 8 May

Results trickle into the IEC results operation centre as counting continues. The bulk of the counting is expected to be complete by the end of the day.

Friday, 9 May

Parties have until 9pm to file any complaints about the voting or counting

Saturday, 10 May

The IEC is expected to issue the formal declaration of results

Thursday, May 15

The IEC must declare the election results within seven days of election day, but not before all complaints have been dealt with, unless they have gone on appeal to the Electoral Court

Wednesday, May 21

The National Assembly holds its first sitting where the president, speaker and deputy speaker are elected
