WHOZ committed

WHOZ aims to increase the wildlife in Mtunzini, starting with the zebra.

MTUNZINI residents congregated in their numbers at Natures Way Backpackers to discuss the future of zebras in Mtunzini and the introduction of wildlife in general.

Brendan Bristow, the founder of Wildlife Heritage Organization Of Zululand (WHOZ), opened the meeting with a definition of what a conservancy really is.

Some of the more important points included the fact that Mtunzini is a conservancy therefore its wildlife and its environment should be protected and helped to grow.

With this in mind, Bristow informed the crowd that as residents and land owners, the fate of Mtinzini, its environment and wildlife is in their hands.

Recently, the two zebra that were removed by Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife, were done so because nobody would take responsibility for them.

The three remaining zebra, which can be seen at Natures Way Backpackers, are only there because Bristow took responsibility which includes insurance and public liability cover at his own cost.

Bristow made an appeal to residents to join as members of WHOZ and help return the wildlife, that was once so abundant in Mtunzini and the Umlalazi Lagoon, to the original numbers.

When the news of the zebra possibly being removed was first released, more than 2 000 people signed a petition, but it was not enough, Bristow said.

‘What needs to be done is that we need to stand together and make decisions as a community and try and help in any way we possibly can to return Mtunzini’s wildlife to its former glory.’

There was an appeal for support in handing out fliers, making phone calls or manning a stall for a few hours to raise funds for WHOZ and ultimately the conservation of Mtunzini.

With the help of WHOZ, and people like Bristow, the natural environment will be maintained for future generations to enjoy. Where else can people see Zebras drinking from the church fountain or duiker and bushbuck ambling along the golf course.

‘The choice and responsibility is ours and if something is not done soon, who knows what the future may hold for both us and our wildlife.’ Bristow concluded.
