Crafting queens celebrate five decades

eShowe Womens’ Institute members receive their 50-year service badges and certificates from the organisation.

SINCE they joined the Womens’ Institute (WI) in 1964, eShowe residents Marthie Snyman and Susan Lolliot have become the well-deserving recipients of 50-year service badges and certificates from the organisation.

In their first year, the dedicated women were members of the WI in Nkwalini.

‘As a farming community with not much else to do, it was the answer for all the women in the area,’ said Susan.

‘There we could learn to knit, crochet and bake to our hearts content.

‘Somewhere in the 1990s, the Nkwalini farms were sold and we settled in eShowe where we joined the Umsebe WI.’

Both Susan and Marthie had been chosen as ‘Lady of the Year’ for their contribution to the organisation.

They have also been presidents for both the Nkwalini WI and Umsebe WI.

‘Now the years have crept up on us and 50 years has gone by,’ said Susan.

‘It’s been a wonderful journey.’
