School fire causes minimal damage

Fire at Richards Bay Primary School uniform shop contained

SENIOR phase pupils at Richards Bay Primary School in Meerensee were evacuated from classrooms on Thursday afternoon when a fire broke out at the school’s uniform shop.

According to City of uMhlathuze Fire and Rescue Services’ Andrew Vumba, the fire department responded to the emergency at around midday and the fire was contained.

He said the room is on a stand-alone block and other buildings were not affected.

Vumba could not confirm how the fire started but said it was being investigated.

Meanwhile, Deputy Principal Mr J Roos confirmed that no injuries were sustained during the incident, and no one was in the premises at the time.

‘The uniform shop is only open in the mornings, so there was no one at the premises when the fire started.

‘There was minimal structural damage but some uniforms were burnt.

‘We are busy assessing the extent of the damage and suspect the fire was caused by an electrical fault, but this is yet to be confirmed,’ he said.
