A YOUNG Nongoma man was sentenced to life imprisonment for threatening and raping a woman.
Mcabangeleni Gumbi (25) of Ophalule Area took to the dock at Nongoma Regional Court and was convicted last Monday.
KZN Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni commended the outstanding work done by Nongoma detectives that led to the arrest and conviction of the accused.
‘Thank you to community members for assisting the police to arrest the culprit. I want to encourage rape victims not to be afraid of reporting such crimes even if they are being intimidated by the culprits,’ said Ngobeni.
In August last year, Gumbi went to the victim’s room and demanded money from her. The woman, who did not have money on her, was threatened and subsequently raped.
After raping the woman, Gumbi fell asleep and she managed to escape and report the matter to the police.
A case of rape was opened at Nongoma SAPS and with the help of the community; the accused was arrested and charged.
