No arrests in Bay doctor murder

Police remain mum on leads and arrests in doctor murder case.

A WEEK after Zululand clinical psychologist,Professor Humphrey Ngcobo was gunned down in his vehicle, police remain mum on possible leads and arrests.

While the motive has not been established, it is believed to be a ‘hit’ attack on the well-known Richards Bay academic, who died in a hail of bullets in the early hours of last Sunday morning.

Members of the Forensic Science Laboratory from Amanzimtoti, who inspected Ngcobo’s bullet-riddled vehicle at his Meerensee residence last week, confirmed nine bullets had penetrated Ngcobo’s luxury BMW through the driver’s window and windscreen.

Police told the Zululand Observer on Tuesday that five bullet heads had penetrated Dr Ngcobo in the chest and abdomen area.

‘No arrests have been made at this stage. We are still awaiting results of the autopsy and cannot divulge any more information owing to the sensitivity of the case,’ said Captain Debbie Ferreira.

The unmarried 47-year-old clinical psychologist had been based at Life Empangeni Garden Clinic for the past 17 years and was the former HOD in the Psychology Department at the University of Zululand

He was reportedly leaving Bhubesi Guest House at Mzingazi after a graduation party at around 3.10am when he was approached by an unknown male.

The suspect, wearing a pinkish apron and a woman’s hat fired multiple shots at the victim.

Two occupants in the vehicle (one in the front and one in the back seat) miraculously survived with no injury. Six cartridge cases were found on the scene.

Ngcobo was rushed to Netcare The Bay Hospital where he later died.
