Flow of stinking stormwater is a problem

A storm-water drain over-flows and runs straight past a local businesses front door in Empangeni

FILTHY, foul smelling stormwater flowing past their front doors is what a business in Empangeni faces every day.

Jubane Petroleum in Second Street Empangeni has been putting up with this problem for months.

A stormwater drain, adjacent to their building, has water slowly building up and forcing its way through rubble which is covering a drain in the parking area.

The drain, which has been filled with broken bricks and pieces of shattered concrete, continues filling up with water and rubbish.

The water, along with all the muck and rubbish it can carry, makes its way down the slight incline past, Jubane Petroleum’s front door and then on to the road.

According to an employee at the company, the problem has been there since he started working there.

‘The issue has been reported to the Municipality and yet the polluted water still flows. Our customers have to drive through this stinky water and then walk through it to get to our business. I have to walk through it everyday and it cannot be healthy.’

While the problem is not just scaring potential business away, it is also a health hazard to the public as a number of pedestrians walk past the property on a daily basis. At the time of going to press the municipality was unavailable for comment.
