Cancer support group seeks members

Community urged to join Zululand Cancer Support Group

BROADING its scope for 2014, the Zululand Cancer Support Group is on a mission to generate renewed community interest, increase their member base and incorporate a variety of exciting and beneficial additions to the monthly meetings.

When the group met last week, group coordinator Michelle Jewlall of LifeLine Zululand said the meetings have been running for 11 years with Netcare The Bay Hospital as partner, and while there are 25 regular members, the meetings are open to all cancer patients, survivors and their families.

They are offered guidance and help from LifeLine trained volunteers and share their stories and experiences with each other.

‘We want the community to join our meetings and benefit from the debriefing sessions and information from our subject matter experts who include medical specialists and, motivational speakers.

‘Our topics for the year include homeopathy, naturopathy, healthcare, nutrition, social activities, life coaching and iridology.

‘The community should take note of the cancer stats, but also keep a positive attitude and take proactive measures to deal with this disease. The group is a support mechanism which can be tapped into.

‘ With Lifeline on board, counseling services are readily available and can offer relief and support,’ she said.

Discussions

The group meet on the first Wednesday of every month at 6.30pm at Netcare The Bay Hospital.

Due to poor attendance at last week’s meeting, guest speaker Dr Faryal Luhar, who spoke briefly, will host an in-depth talk on natural health care for cancer at a meeting on 20 March at 6pm; the venue is still to be confirmed.

Dr Lunar practices naturopathic medicine using natural medicines and therapies to address conditions such as chronic headaches, digestive disorders and diabetes and treatments are aimed at addressing the root cause of illness and not just symptoms.

She was closely linked to a cancer group in Canada, Toronto where she delivered several talks on the benefits of Naturopathic Medicine in cancer care and moved to Richards Bay last year.
