Protea call-up for Abbott

Abbott cracks nod for Newlands squad after performing in domestic league

LOADED and ready to fire again at cricket test level.

That is Zululand’s pace bowler Kyle Abbott who has been called up for the Proteas cricket squad’s third and decisive test at Newlands from Saturday.

The talented 26-year-old, currently the form bowler on the South African domestic scene over the past two seasons, is coming in to replace injured Wayne Parnell.

Abbott is not a newcomer to the international scene.

He impressed on his test debut against Pakistan in February last year, ending with bowling figures of 9/68 in 172 balls bowled. He also dominated last season’s first class competition as the top wicket-taker with 49 scalps, and was top of the four-day game’s wicket table with 22 wickets at 13.09.

‘Representing one’s country is always a huge honour and a privilege,’ said Abbott.

‘I am proud, excited and looking forward to the week ahead. It is great to see that my hard work has paid off.’

After performing on test debut and dominating the domestic scene, it is great to see Abbott getting another shot at international level.

But his selection for the starting line-up is not necessarily guaranteed since he will have to compete with Newlands local Rory Kleinveldt for a spot.

Kleinveldt probably has the inside track for selection. The Zululand community will just have to hold thumbs for Kyle.

Abbott flew to Cape Town on today to join the Protea camp in their preparations for the important test lying ahead.
